Charles' Health Tip of the Month!!!Acne is caused by the overproduction of male hormone that occurs in puberty which stimulates the production of oil and causes thickening of skin cells that clog pores.  A skin bacterium, Proprionibacterium acnesis is also responsible.  Over the counter medicines with benzoylperoxide or salicylic acid are  used first to unplug skin pores. The next step involves medicines related to vitamin A that are applied directly to the skin. Retin-A is one example.  Next are antibiotics in cream, lotions, or gels, such as Erythromycin or clindamycin that are put on the skin. They kill off Proprionibacterium, and they counter the the irritative effect of fatty acids in skin oil. For girls, birth control pills work by blocking the action of male hormone but some risk is involved here (side effects) A healthy diet coupled with exercise is another way to control acne.

GOALS:
One of my goals for the dojo this upcoming year is to have the addition of 15-20 new members.  I would like everyone to help me out with this goal by bringing one friend, acquaintance,  neighbor, brother, sister…you get the point, to the dojo during the month of September.  More to come about the student drive in our next monthly dojo update.

 DID YOU KNOW?

The Tonfa was developed from two different sources. One was the grist mill handle and the other was a crank handle used for drawing water from a well. Used singularly or in pairs, the practitioner could defend against other weapons, such as katana or bo, effectively. The tonfa can be used for striking, blocking, and punching techniques. The handle allows the user to swing the tonfa outward for striking and blocking while letting it return to the outside of the forearm to prepare for the next technique.
